After a brief hiatus in 2020, the Knitfest Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival is back and about to brighten the streets of the little hinterland town of Maleny, with festive colours and everything 'yarned', in 2021's theme 'There's a Dragon in my Garden'.

Knitfest gives yarn lovers and yarn creatives the opportunity to have a fun and creative weekend celebrating fibre arts and crafts, whilst enabling the tight-knit community of Maleny to get involved, exhibiting their very inspirational skills. The Main Street of Maleny is yarn bombed* and decorated, with the town centre becoming the pivotal point of art, creativity, workshops, music, trade stalls and craft markets.

Maleny cows, all rugged up for Knitfest!

For folk like me, who have absolutely no idea what yarn bombing means - 'yarn bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk' - with thanks to Wikipedia for this comprehensive explanation.

The Maleny Knitfest is a fabulously fun way for families to explore hidden creative skills, talents and individuality and to showcase their needle prowess, whether it be with knitting, crocheting, basket weaving, spinning, weaving or felting and yarns more.

"Even Ned Kelly gets in on the Knitfest action in Maleny

Knitfest has a bit of a competitive spirit too, with competitions running for community groups, art associations and skilled artisans to utilise their decorating skills by adorning the trees with handmade art installations made of yarns and fibres. Competitions for the 'Best Beanie'; 'Scarf'; 'Shawl' and 'Tea Cosy' are also running, so nimble-fingered creatives need to start flexing those fingers. And the tassel at the end of the scarf? There are some awesome prizes available for the 'best' entrants in these competitions.
