A stay at home Mum who doesn't stay at home much; too many exciting things to be discovering in this city...
Set the winter school holidays on fire
The winter school holidays are looming. And they're a tricky time for us parents because lots of outdoor activities which keep the small people occupied in fair weather are not so fun in winter. I for one do not relish the thought of sitting on a windswept beach on a ten degree day. During the school holidays Kryal Castle - close to Ballarat - will be hosting a spectacular Knights of Fire event to get your kids all fired up.

Kryal Castle opened in the 1970s and today is a major tourist attraction in Victoria. It features a main arena where jousting and sword fighting can be watched at various times throughout the day. Dotted around this central point are other timed events such as shows in the Jester's Theatre and potion workshops in the Oggle Watch Tower. Then there are exhibitions and shops which can be perused at your leisure, such as the torture chamber (my children's favourite!), the blacksmith's forge and the maze.

Kryal Castle often puts on special events or themes for the holidays and Knights of Fire is one such event. Kids will be able to witness knights on horseback, jousting with flaming lances and fighting with fire-lit swords, as they battle it out in the arena. Audience participation is welcomed as you cheer on your favourite knight, and there is usually a chance to get up close to the horses afterwards, or get a photo with the armour clad knights.
Family tickets for Kryal Castle cost $99 and cover most, but not all, activities. See the website for more details. Being taken back to medieval times is quite the novelty for most children, so when you're racking your brains for something to do in July, plan a trip to the castle. Just be sure not to wake the slumbering dragon.
