Kitty Flanagan smashes it out of the park
Kitty Flanagan has built a reputation as one of Australia's best stand-up comedians. Over a period of 26 years, she has gone from road-tipping around Australia to working on a number of Aussie sketch shows, to running sell-out tours in both Australia and the UK. Kitty isn't slowing down either. With her material sharpened to a fine point, Flanagan has once again hit the Adelaide Fringe with another sell-out show.
Kitty Flanagan's new show, Smashing, is the crescendo of Flanagan's comedic journey. Having tackled such a great number of subjects ,Kitty now tackles something which makes her quite uncomfortable, sex. Taking the audience through stories from her past, modern expectations and her own hopes and dreams, Kitty brings everyone through a crash course of what it is to be 40-something and single.
With her lively, animated style, Kitty paints vivid pictures of her encounters to slip everyone into her life. Kitty's facial expression, tonal changes and pacing are the big selling points of her show. Her high energy character allows her jokes to live on that liveliness alone. The crowd can't help but absorb some of her bubbly yet pessimistic attitude. With her multiple failings and relationships, Kitty approaches it with a kind of satire and sarcasm that you can't help but side with. With so many agreeable points, Kitty quickly gets the audience onside with her observations.
Part of a Kitty Flanagan show is the atmosphere. Kitty speaks to her demographic well and with an audience so enraptured and enjoying the show as much as they do, you can't help but just have fun amongst the crowd. On the night I attended, Julia Gillard herself sat behind me, enjoying the show just as much. When I asked her if she had any comments to possibly add, she gave me a warm-hearted "Fabulous show!". If anything, that is a testament to the wide range that Kitty Flanagan appeals to.
Her unashamedly Australian personality, relatable topics, great pacing and rhythm all add up to a show that is everything it should be. Kitty Flanagan has done it again and builds upon an already strong career to present a show that is a stand-out at this year's Fringe. Those who love Australian comedy keep an eye out for Kitty's next show which is sure to be a blockbuster.
Kitty Flanagan is performing "Smashing" at the Royalty Theatre every night until the March 18th. Unfortunately, due to her popularity and quality of the show, she has sold out every single night. Watch this space however. Kitty Flanagan is far from done and I'm sure another show will be coming soon.
