The exact age and origin of the kite is not known but it has been enjoyed for more than two thousand years. It is said to have originated in China, with the earliest account dated around 200 B.C. when a Chinese General of the Han Dynasty flew a kite over the walls of a city he was attacking to measure how far his army would have to tunnel to reach past the defences. From its origins of war, over time it has become known as a competitive and/or leisurely, pleasurable activity, depending on the type of event. I remember from my childhood when my father used to have 'kite battles' with his mates and they would run their kite strings/tails through crushed glass laden glue - the better to decapitate the opponent's kite. It was quite a competitive sport enjoyed amongst friends.
Kites have evolved and can be quite elaborate compared to days of old, but still a pleasure to behold as it soars through the skies. Come along to

Saturday 7 January 2023 from 10am to 6pm ACDT for the
Kite Flying Festival. It's a free event, but you do need to
register your attendance and reserve your spot . Do keep in mind that no outside kites are allowed due to regulations and can be bought inside the venue at reasonable prices. You'll find kites of all types, a great variety of food, merchandise stalls, mechanical rides and a jumping castle for the kids. Enjoy DJ produced music all day and come out and have fun at this free, family friendly event.
