Stopping at this cute pocket-sized coffee shop and creative bakery at 161 Eastern Valley Way, Middle Cove makes me feel like I've dropped into a friend's kitchen for a quick cuppa. The walls are lined with artwork and as I sip my White Horse coffee blend (amongst the best Specialty Coffee by Broadsheet and The Urban List), I browse their catalogue of fabulous cake creations. I choose a lemon tart. It's sweet and tangy, with a fine, light pastry, and goes perfectly with the strong coffee. The display cabinet is full of other delicacies - cheesecakes, croissants, chocolate brownies and lemon meringue tarts. On a chillier day, one of their chunky pies would really hit the spot.
For over ten years, Kiss Me Cake has been making custom-designed sweet treats and special-occasion cakes. Everything is made from scratch, with the best quality ingredients, including love. With a motto like 'If you dream it, we can make it', their exquisite designer cakes to celebrate christenings, baby showers, birthdays, and corporate functions are unique and special, and their aspirations are high. Co-owner, Jo, says their vision is to become the best creative bakery in Australia, to follow sustainable farmer-miller-baker-consumer guidelines for low impact on the environment and their community, and to adhere to the strong family values and ethics they grew up with.
Recently renovated, the space is clean, light and airy. There are a couple of tall stools at the front window - the perfect place to sit and watch the world go by - or the intimate tables and chairs in the adjoining room seat larger groups. Kiss Me Cake offers free wi-fi, and there's plenty of parking just around the corner on a couple of side streets. In the short space of time it's taken to finish my coffee and cake several people have come into order special-occasion cakes. The friendly staff take the time to sit with them and go through their ideas and discuss possibilities. I don't have a celebration in the near future requiring a special cake, but when I do, this is where I'll come.
