Kino Cinemas

When I have cause to go into the city and my event or purchase isn't day specific, I choose to go in on a Monday. There are many factors about this day that make it more amenable for me. There are often less people milling around, having been distracted by their work week beginning or some such. Even the renegade students seem to leave their ditching classes routine for other days of the week.
This all suits me well because I prefer my Melbourne as quiet as possible. The same goes with my cinema audiences, and it just so happens that Monday is cheap ticket day ($7) at my favourite cinema in town: Kino.
As a partner of Palace Cinemas, Kino is an elegant establishment which caters for – what seems to be these days– the more adventurous film goers. If your idea of an enjoyable couple of hours is watching a rag tag bunch of no-good miscreants making obscene jokes on other peoples behalf whilst organising parades of senseless explosions with garishly loud soundtracks assaulting your ears, then I recommend you find somewhere else to do it. The more tasteless films get kept away from Kino, leaving room for wonderful and less well-known stories to have their day.
This moving picture haven is for refined European comedies and dramas, independently funded Australian suspense thrillers and the more emotional deft and moving of what might currently be on offer from Hollywood. Mirroring this sensibility is the meek Monday audiences. Sure, we laugh whole-heartedly, gasp at the appropriate places and shed a tear on command, but we do not talk, or eat constantly, nor do we answer phone calls despite the polite advertisement asking us not to. I've taken to thinking of this cinema as my own personal home entertainment facility i.e. lounge room, one that I share willingly with like minded members of a greater community.
The staff are kind and friendly. Their approachable nature making ticket purchases an easy affair rather than the hustle and impersonal service found elsewhere. If you happen to have ample waiting time before your session begins, the staff invite you to take a seat in their newly decorated lounge, or to sample something from the lunch menu at the candy bar. In a short time I will be frequenting that plush space whilst eagerly tapping my toes in between sessions at the
Alliance Française French Film Festival , which is celebrating it's 24th year this time around. After seeing the trailer recently I must say that I am quite excited to attend, and at my favourite cinema no less!
