I don't often go out for breakfast - mostly because I'm a poor uni student, but also because I'm not very functional so early in the morning, especially if I haven't had any coffee. This means that I usually only venture out for special occasions such as birthdays or, as was the case this morning, for an early Mother's Day celebration.

The Kinky Lizard in Scarborough has fast become a favourite place for breakfast in our family; however, it's also a favourite for people just stopping by for a quick coffee, and even for dog walkers. It would be unusual to go to the Kinky Lizard and not see at least a couple of dogs tied up outside - and there's always a bowl of water for them there, too.

If you're not just passing by for a cup of coffee, I would recommend booking a table in advance, as the cafe itself is quite small. Although there's not a lot of room, the staff are very accommodating and once rearranged all of their inside tables when I booked for myself and a group of around ten friends. However, there are usually always spare tables outside and heaters to ensure it doesn't get too cold.

And now, on to the most important part of all - the food. Although you do have to order and pay at the counter, breakfast will usually be served quite quickly. This morning, my group of five were in and out of the restaurant in about 45 minutes, which shows just how fast we got our meals.

Their menu (currently slightly different to the one on their website) is only a page long, but there is enough variety for everyone to find something they'll like - plus a large selection of drinks and coffees. And trust me, all of the food looks amazing! (My photos definitely do not do it justice.)

Although I usually opt for the eggs benedict (which I always love, but is particularly good here), this morning I decided to be adventurous and choose the french toast with bacon. Yes, bacon. On top of the french toast. I was slightly confused at first, but it tasted great. Very, very sweet though (there was a bucketload of syrup on my plate), so probably not the thing to order if you're on a diet. Also a slight word of caution - although the menu says the french toast comes with pistachios, I actually found three or four different types of nuts on my plate. So just be careful if you've got a nut allergy.

But now I'm just being picky. I can honestly not say anything bad about this place. It is even quite reasonably priced, with most of their larger breakfast items around the $16 to $19 mark and smaller things like toast and croissants under $10.

And if Scarborough is a little too far away for you, you could always check out the Kinky Lizard in East Perth. Happy breakfasting.
