Kinky Boots is another smash hit for Spotlight Theatrical Company. The story of Kinky Boots is inspired by true events. Charlie Price inherits his father's business after his death. The last thing Charlie wanted was to take over the fourth-generation owned and operated family men's shoe business, especially when he finds out that it is on the verge of bankruptcy. His recent engagement to Nicola changed the direction of his life where instead of following the desires of his father to take over the family business he is now following the desires of Nicola by moving to London to live her dream. Fate, however, put Charlie in a position where he had to decide his own destiny. Was he going to fire the Price & Sons factory workers and wind down the company or sell it off in a business deal as suggested by Nicola? Charlie is put to the test when factory worker, Lauren, challenges Charlie to find a way to save the factory rather than take the easy way out. Her challenge coincides with a chance meeting with drag queen, Lola, who turns Charlie's life and the shoe factory upside down.

I was expecting to hear Cyndi Lauper's hits from the 80s but was pleasantly surprised to hear music and lyrics written by Cyndi Lauper especially for Kinky Boots. Ms Lauper has certainly not lost her flair for producing musical masterpieces with songs such as The Most Beautiful Thing, Not My Father's Son, Land of Lola, What a Woman Wants, and The Soul of a Man. I was surprised she didn't write a song called, Boys Just Wanna Have Fun. Cyndi won the Tony Award for best original score, making her the best woman to win alone in that category. An award well deserved.

I was a bit slow off the mark to realise that the angels were actually drag queens. They looked amazing, with legs most women would envy. The contrast of the factory workers in their drab garb against the splash of colourful glitter and extravagant costumes of the angels injected life into the show and got the full attention of the audience. The spectacular costumes coupled with song and dance routines bursting with energy ensured the audience's undivided attention.

Credit to Director, Katie Grace, Musical Director, Steven Days, and choreographers Georgia Beck and Jackson Kook. They make a formidable team which was evident in the resounding applause after each number. Although all the cast were brilliantly engaged in their roles and oozed charisma and energy, special mention goes to Abu Kebe who projected a remarkable amount of emotion and energy into the role of Lola. His command of the stage was impressive. Also, Zoe Richards took little time in winning over the audience with her charming and endearing portrayal of Lauren during her performance of The History of Wrong Guys. The only improvement I would recommend would be for Don and Lola to speak more clearly and project their voice when speaking as on occasion it was not possible to hear what they were saying.

As much as the show was extravagant, there were multiple underlying messages that were beautifully scripted and were depicted in scenes such as the boxing match; Lauren declaring her love for Charlie, and Nicola realising that she could not mould Charlie into becoming the man she wanted him to be. Charlie and Lola, who had a lot more in common than they realised learnt that it was okay for them not to be their father's sons but to find their own identity and create their own destinies and legacies.

The musicians were in top form, although having them positioned in partial view at the back of the stage, with only their heads in view, in my opinion, was a faux pas as it broke the illusion created by such a well-designed set.

Kinky Boots is uplifting and was extremely well received by the audience. There is no doubt that you will enjoy the show. However, tickets are selling fast, so I recommend getting a group together and booking your seats as soon as possible.
