There is no doubt Melbourne does breakfast well. This may be health-oriented, Middle Eastern influenced or just a good old-fashioned bacon and eggs breakfast. But what if, for a change, you feel just like a piece of toast with good bread, good butter and a choice of toppings? Well, then you would come to Kings and Knaves Espresso, a new cafe which has opened near Flagstaff Gardens at the top end of Melbourne.
The coffee is excellent, from Melbourne All Press Espresso roastery. There is a choice of seeded, plain or fruit high-quality bread and a multitude of toppings for those who prefer their toast laden with cheese, prosciutto, salmon or salami. But even the simplest toast with butter or perhaps slices of avocado will taste great and no doubt bring back childhood memories of warm toast with melting butter eaten on cold mornings. You can also add toppings such as chilli, peanut butter, banana, maple syrup, tomatoes, and rocket. There is also a berry compote with yoghurt served with fruit bread as well as some sweet treats.
The staff are extremely friendly and am sure will source a particular topping if enough people ask for it. The menu will evolve, dependent on what's in season as well. And if you like a French accent with your morning toast and coffee, one of the very friendly male staff members provides that too.
