As we journeyed from Melbourne to Canberra, we needed somewhere to break up the drive for lunch.

We decided to try in Oxley, a simple looking restaurant and not far from some wineries. At first it looked very quiet but it was just 12pm, the beginning of lunch time.

We were led to our table and had a plethora of choices from the menu above to the main menu too. Here's a sample menu to get an idea. The current menu had choices such as a prawn laksa and more! A great variety.

After we ordered they also put up a burger special with plenty of ingredients from bacon to pork. It also noted that the meat was from "happy animals". I was a little glad they put it up after, because it would have been quite tempting.

I admit that the casual note "They Rule Dude!" in the menu persuaded me to order the potato rosti fingers. They were thick and crispy, just how I prefer my potato chips. Our waitress told us we had to finish them all, so I made sure of that.

I chose the gnocchi with pumpkin and mushrooms. The gnocchi was large and filling, but the dish overall ensured that it was just enough. Quality over quantity after all.

Meanwhile my friends had the minestrone soup for the cold weather and the fettucine with almonds, rosemary etc on the menu board. They were all simple but tasty dishes.

Another board at the front swayed me by asking "Did you budget for our lemon tart?" It's lucky we shared because the tart was enormous and rich. Beautifully presented and with a delicate, crispy surface and a nice and crunchy base.

By the time we left, the restaurant was full and there were some people waiting for a table. As we had several more hours to drive to Canberra, we were happy to leave soon after and allow this little cafe to flourish! If you're driving by this area, it's a nice, simple place for a lunch stop.

If you're a wine person, which none of us were, you can make a day out of it and drop by the nearby wineries - including the Brown Brother' s location in Milawa down the road.
