Bell Shakespeare’s 2024 season continues with
King Lear . This iteration of
King Lear tells the story of a king who has ruled for a lifetime – and with plans to divide the kingdom between his three daughters when the time comes for succession, Yet, as often happens in stories like this, King Lear is challenged – and the way he reacts will destroy his family and country as he his thrust into a turbulent storm of rage, self-discovery and acceptance in what could be Shakespeare’s exploration of filial ingratitude, or a sad tale of a man in decline whilst his daughters have to deal with the consequences of tragic choices.
The story asks many questions, both on the page and in performance: Is
King Lear the story of an entitled and selfish king, or is it the story of a naïve and proud daughter unwilling to compromise with her ill father? In short, it is all of these things, a complex story about humanity, and the intimacy of who we are and the people around us.
This year, the play takes place in Sydney at the Neilson Nutshell, and at the Arts Centre in Melbourne in June and July, and it is being performed for the first time since 2010 and is directed by Peter Evans. This iteration of the play stars one of Australia’s finest classic actors, Robert Menzies in a heart-wrenching new production that will be powerful and unforgettable. Robert Menzies has also starred as Polonius in
Hamlet, Friar in
Romeo and Juliet, and has had a forty-year career in the theatre history of Australia.
King Lear runs for two and a half hours, with a twenty-minute interval, and is recommended for ages fifteen and over.
