Kinfolk is an unique cafe situated across the road from Southern Cross Station. The cafe was opened early in 2010 and is a social enterprise, that is - an organisation that " applies business strategies to achieving philanthropic goals ." Kinfolk has a few core staff, who provide training and experience for volunteers and distribute their profits between four projects, in Rwanda, Ghana, Palm Island and Melbourne itself.

Entering the cafe itself, the design is rustic, yet cosy, creating a lovely atmosphere to sit, chat and chill. The crooks and crannies were filled up with artsy bookshelves, handwritten book covers with poetry and the likes. There are a variety of tables and benches for seating. Several were large communal tables, which may be different for those who are not used to sitting next to strangers.

The waitress explained the lunch menu to us, which usually includes a frittata, soup, sandwiches and a salad - but the ingredients change regularly depending on availability of seasonal produce. Mains are generally around $10.

On this occasion, we had 'Braised Lamb Shoulder' with cous cous, roquette, currents and minted yoghurt, and 'Frittata' - sliced cauliflower, zucchini, aged goats cheese with salad and relish. The quality and tastes were average, and portions were relatively small.

After your meal you will be given a coffee bean to choose which project you would like the profit to be distributed to. And if you're looking to gain experience in hospitality, or contribute to a good cause, speak to the staff at Kinfolk about volunteering there.
