Prize-winning steampunk assemblage art will be on display at Redcliffe's st & #43 ; baker & #43 ; studio and gallery from Tuesday 7 July. Since opening the studio and gallery in 2013, internationally renowned painter and printmaker Jo St Baker has created a dynamic workspace and art viewing area. She regularly curates memorable exhibitions such as 'Kindred Spirits', an exhibition of artwork created by Bec Peart and Martin Pedder of Blackbird's Emporium and special guest artist Gill Pyke of Catamation.

The exhibition name represents the shared vision of the three artists, who have an uncanny ability to see the potential in unwanted items and recycle them to produce works of art that take on new lives of their own. Marvel at Gill's intricate Victorian era botanical prints and turn of the century patent blueprints, and her stunning mechanical butterflies that fuse organic (real butterfly wings) with metallic.

In 2014, Bec and Martin won Brisbane City Council's Recycling Art Competition for their quirky assemblage titled Octopus's Garden. The artistic long-time friends scavenged council tip shops for items that they could fuse to create a steampunk construction. Octopus's Garden was born from reclaimed wrought iron chairs, a TV cabinet, cogs, books, and a birdcage.

The collaborative duo also won the competition in 2013 (then known as the Brisbane City Council Tip Shop Art Competition) for their creation Junkalina and the Clockingbird. Exquisite Junkalina features a metal teapot as a hat, and a skirt festooned with metallic gadgetry and everyday items including house numbers, keys, and kitchen utensils.

Come along to this celebration of creativity and imagination. Redcliffe's st & #43 ; baker & #43 ; studio and gallery, with its chic industrial floor space, is the perfect venue to showcase this steampunk assemblage art. Wonder at enigmatic mechnical butterflies, let Junkalina beguile you with her beauty and elegance, and be drawn into an Octopus's Garden of books, lanterns, and magnifying glasses.
