In an unassuming Canberra street, there is a door that acts as a portal from the drab, industrial surrounds of Phillip to what could be a back alley in Kyoto or a bustling market stall in Ueno. The store is called
and it's hard to say no to heading inside if you're a Japanophile (or just kimono-curious!).
Part flea market, part fabric emporium, this family-run business is one of those very niche places you can't quite believe exists. Inside, you can find vintage and antique statues, noren (hanging fabric room dividers) kanzashi, brooches and trinkets, handmade hair accessories and more. A small army of gorgeous wooden kokeshi dolls quietly jostle for your attention from the shelves but cute though they are, there is so much more to see.
One wall is a vibrant rainbow of kimono fabric, the rows of bolts (over 1200 in all) create a mesmerising riot of colour. Available in silk, cotton, wool and synthetic materials, the fabrics are vintage but like fine wines, they age beautifully – there may be the odd needle hole or dye run but generally, these will be minimal. You can purchase by the metre but because the fabric is vintage, there is a limited amount of each. And if you can't make it to the store, you can order on the
website - spend more than $65 and shipping anywhere in the world is FREE!
If you prefer your kimono ready-made, there are racks bursting with them. Originally the Japanese word for 'clothing,' over time kimono has come to refer to the traditional wrapped front garment and national dress of Japan. As well as kimonos, there are light yukata. You can also choose an obi (sash) to finish the look. The staff are happy to guide you to the right size and help you navigate the process of weaving your limbs into the seemingly endless fabric.
There are kimonos for both adults and kids and the store owner, Jill, explains that many people come in and choose one to wear for a special event or formal occasion. Browsing the racks, it's easy to imagine being so taken by your new look that you might just wear it straight out the door into the surrounding sea of hi-vis and workboots. You may not have the confidence to do that but if you're yearning to discover a magical corner of Kyoto in the heart of Canberra, you should absolutely say konnichiwa to !
