Before coffee houses like Starbucks existed in Singapore, the local coffee shops or "kopi-tiams", as affectionately called in the local dialect language, served the people. Killiney , a coffee shop originated from Singapore since 1951, has brought a piece of that history to Melbourne, with a shop opened on Lygon Street.

The interior décor of the shop stays true to the essence of coffee shops in Singapore, with its simple and humble furniture of black and brown antique wood. The place is comfortable and snug and holds no pretence.

Unlike the overwhelming selection of coffee at cafes, ordering coffee here is less complicated with only three choices- Kopi-O (Black coffee), Kopi (Coffee with condensed milk), and Kopi-C (Coffee with evaporated milk). The coffee beans used by Killiney are roasted with a special recipe, and this makes all the difference in the world. The resultant coffee is richer in taste and aroma, with a tinge of buttery aftertaste.

Instead of the plain old butter toast, try their popular charcoal-grilled kaya toast. Kaya is a spread made from coconut, sugar and eggs, with its origin in Southeast Asia. The charcoal-grilled toasts sandwiching a thick layer of kaya and butter is a matching accompaniment to the traditional coffee. If you would like the full traditional set breakfast, try the toast Killiney hot coffee/tea 2 soft-boiled eggs set, which is priced at $5.80. The soft-boiled eggs are best eaten with black soy sauce and white pepper, which is the local traditional way of consuming it.

The menu here also extends to the local Singaporean dishes such as Hainanese Chicken Rice, Mee Goreng, Laksa, and Chicken Curry etc. Each dish is reasonably priced at $8.50-$9.50. If you are a spice daredevil, the Chicken Curry and Lontong, which is a vegetable curry dish with rice cake and beancurd, will overwhelm your senses with its robust flavour and leave you wanting more.

The place is very accessible, as you can take any of the major tram routes that run through Swanston Street. Just alight at Swanston/ Queensberry Street, and a short walk to Lygon Street will take you there.

Otherwise, look out for the opening of their new outlet on Bourke Street, which is coming soon.
