Wounded Heroes Australia is a "national community 'volunteer' organisation, that supports the Australian Defence Force, our Veterans and their families in financial crisis, or facing homelessness. They provide front-line, emergency support with items including food, electricity bills, rent and homecare – within 12-24 hours. There are no Government funds, State or Federal, that are able to support the organisation (as Grants are for a specific purpose, whereas we just need cash-at-bank). This means that for the past 10 years they have relied solely on public and corporate donations to meet the crisis, particularly in the Australian Veteran Community."

On Saturday 13th of April, you can support our veterans by attending the Kilcoy Diggers Race Day, which is in recognition of and to honour the courage of Australian Diggers, Diggers in time of conflict and peacekeeping missions.

Where is Kilcoy?

Kilcoy is a rural town located approximately 100 km north west of Brisbane via the Bruce and D'Aguilar Highways and just north of Somerset Dam. You may have heard of it referred to as the Yowie Town, with sightings of these legendary creatures dating back to the aboriginal settlement.

Kilcoy is a pleasant city escape with wineries, boating and fishing facilities. More information is available here.

We're going for the race meeting which will be an excuse to frock up and enjoy a day in the country air. There will even be Diggers Day Fashions of the Field so I'll be wearing a hat, of sorts.

In keeping with the military theme several ceremonies will be performed on the day: The Ode, The Last Post, Silence, Rouse, and the National Anthem.

Entry to the races is Free and gates open at 10:30am.

Kilcoy Race Club is located at 26 Showground Road, WOOLMAR. On-site parking is available.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase with BBQ Steak Sandwiches a speciality. The cafe will have sandwiches, pies, cakes, tea and coffee so no one goes home hungry.

For further details go here.

Personally, I'm no gambler and can't differentiate one end of the horse from another. I am looking forward to the party atmosphere, a day in the country and dressing up. A little bit of patriotism to support our Diggers goes a long way too.
