Multi-talented, multi-award winning artist Kieran Ingram has returned home to Darlington after recently completing a six weeks residency as Fellowship Artist at Ballinglen Arts Foundation in the north-west of the Republic of Ireland.

Kieran is a classically trained professional artist who completed his studies at the Angel Academy in Florence, Italy.

His time spent studying in Florence amongst the work of the masters has provided him with an appreciation of the role of the artist in observing and expressing the subtleties of the human form and natural landscape.

Kieran prefers to work directly from life as he feels that this is the only way to truly capture the essence of his subjects. As a result he spends many hours with the model or in the landscape.

He uses sharpened French charcoal which is uniquely suited to rendering lifelike drawings with the highest level of precision and detail. The versatility of the medium means that brushes and sponges can also be deployed to great effect. The paper is a high quality handmade Italian cotton rag that is both lightweight and very robust making it ideal for detailed drawings.

His oil paintings are completed on canvas in a traditional layered manner.

Impastoed lights are applied to a toned ground followed by glazing and scumbling to achieve subtle tonal and colour shifts which enhance the sense of light and space.

The landscapes are often completed in a more 'impressionistic' manner better suited to conveying the mood and effect of atmosphere in natural scenes.

As well as travelling to Ireland in 2012, Kieran won the Drawing Prize at the York Society Art Awards and the coveted Emerging Artist Prize at the Cossack Art Awards for his painting Broken Shell.

If you would like to see more examples of Kieran's work come along to Darlington Gallery where he is the current feature artist commencing on February 9th.

Kieran says his focus for this exhibition will be "a series of drawings of dead flowers and plants. The drawings are graphite on paper with an emphasis on delicate line work and composition."
