I have a question for you, how long is long enough for children to spend on technology, especially during the school break? Are you the type of parent that lets your children run free with their technology or do you pull the reins and set time limits?

During the school break, write up a routine for the kids for each day so they know what to expect, don't get bored and know how the day is going to be structured. Slot in as much play time as possible, and limit the technology. Your routine could look something like this:

1:00pm - Lunch time
1:30pm - Clean up kitchen
1:45pm - Outside play
2:30pm - Quiet reading time
3:00pm - Craft activity with mum
3:45pm: - Nintendo DS time
4:30pm - DS goes away, play time in room or lounge.
5:00pm - Help mum with dinner

The times don't have to be set religiously but a simple hour by hour routine helps the kids and gets rid of the boredom.

Kids don't need technology time every day, you may even want to make it every second day or once a week. If you are used to relying on technology to keeping the kids entertained, this idea might be hard for you.

Another idea you could do is have 'technology hour' once a day during the school holidays. Write up a list of technology that you have in the house such as TV/watching movies, computer, Nintendo DS, iPod or iPad, PlayStation, Xbox, Wii, PSP, laptop, or what have you. When it is technology hour the kids can look at the list and decide which one they want to use for an hour. You can decide if they can choose (one for each half hour) or only one. If gets squabble over one piece of technology either eliminate that technology or flip a coin.

Technology hour doesn't have to be at the same time everyday, it could go like
Monday: Technology hour 2:00pm-3:00pm
Tuesday: 10:30am - 11:30am
Wednesday: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
and so on.

At least in this hour you can get a few chores done, the kids will have their technology fix and then they can find something else to do.

I hope this has helped, it is a strategy my parents use with both my sets of siblings and it works.
