Make a crown and be royal

The Perth Mint is a fancy place full of gold and beautiful rare items. But it can also be a lot of fun for kids, allowing them to make something rare themselves. There are some crowns that the kids are able to take home, but don't worry. the kids aren't planning a heist, they are welcome to come and take part in the Kids Crown Making Activities at the Perth Mint these school holidays.

Before you start making crowns, the kids will get the chance to take a guided tour around the Mint, which is a historical premise, so the kids have to be on their best behaviour! The guide will show you and the children around the buildings, telling you all about the secrets of the Mint, as well as give you all the chance to see the exhibitions on offer at the Mint right now.

You will get to see gold nuggets, touch a bullion bar worth more than $1 million, and see some of the most famous coins and medals ever made. There are so many exciting things to see and do. You can even get up close to a colossal one-tonne 99.99% pure gold coin which won the title of the ‘largest coin’ by Guinness World Records. This is something that the kids might find very interesting, especially if they have an eye for the expensive things in life!

After that, you will see your guide pour some gold into the original melting house. You will learn how the gold goes from the liquid, pourable gold to a beautiful gold bar in a matter of moments.

And then, the kids will step out into the sunshine, into the amphitheatre area, and the kids can make themselves a crown. It won't be with any molten gold, but it's going to be a lot of fun. The kids can get creative and decorate their crowns, however they want. They can take it home with them and spend some time being royal.
And don't forget to go to the shop, but this is for the adults. Get yourself a gift or two, and invest in gold!

If you want to let your kids get a crown and learn more about the Perth Mint, then head to the Perth Mint between Saturday, the 23rd of September and Saturday the 30th of September. Each tour takes an hour and runs every hour between 10:30am and 4pm. Make sure to book in early, this will be a lot of fun so it will be very popular. Tickets cost $22 for an adult and $12 for children. Kids under 5 are free. Get minted and be golden!
