Are your kids bored? Do they like to get crafty? Well check out these ideas below which utilises the humble roll of wrapping paper and turns it into a craft project that can last all afternoon! If you're anything like me, you don't like spending a lot of money on craft supplies as they get used once, and then sit in the cupboard for the next year. These ideas below use wrapping paper and other items around your home, so you save money and room!

Clear the kitchen table and get creative!

1/ Wrap empty boxes to make desk organisers. Take a look around your home and track down tissue boxes, cereal boxes, soap boxes, medication boxes, lids from hairspray, spice boxes or anything you find that looks sturdy and interesting. Cut your wrapping paper to wrap around the outside, glue it on and then decorate. Children will love to customise each box and fill them with pens and accessories.

2/ Make origami with wrapping paper. There are plenty of printable instructions online (see here for an easy heart) and see if you child can follow the instructions to make their own, or you can do it together. Glue your origami onto cards or turn them into pictures to frame.

3/ Make a picture in the colour scheme of your home, by taking the back off a picture frame and tracing the paper template onto a wrapping paper that matches your home. This will be the background to whatever picture you choose to glue on. We drew around my daughter's hand in a matching plain colour and added her age, so we can look back on it as she grows. It looks stylish and also captures a moment in time.

4/ Wrap notebooks in colourful wrapping paper to make into gifts for friends. Add stickers, glue on drawings or print out a title (eg. "Izzy's Diary") to stick on the front.

5/ Make your own rosettes to attach to gifts or glue onto a card. Cut one long rectangle 45cm x 4cm out of wrapping paper and fold it like an accordion up the length. When finished, tape the two shorter ends together to make a loop. Fold it back up again and splay it out from the middle to create a fan. Pinch the folds in at the centre and hold down with rolled tape, or double sided tape, to keep the centre in place. Cut out a cardboard circle and glue over the middle. Repeat for the back. Glue onto a blank card and decorate to the season. See instruction photos below.

These are just some ideas to get you started, but you will find that when you have wrapping paper in front of you, your kids will come up with even more imaginative ways to use it. Have fun!
