Egg cartons have always been a source of joy for toddlers and preschoolers - they can make long green caterpillars with them, use them as paint pots or cut them up to make chunky necklaces. When you start looking at the humble egg carton with your kids, it can be fun to think up different ways to use them.

In this activity, my daughter and I cut up two egg cartons into individual cups and looked at them for inspiration. These are 3 ideas that we came up with on a quiet, rainy day inside. Why don't you cut up some cartons and see what creative ideas you come up with? Your kids are sure to surprise you...

Egg Carton Jellyfish are easy to make and are cute to hang off little fingers or from a coat hanger. We painted 3 single egg cups blue (inside and outside), glued on white paper eyes, cut up strips of bubble wrap and taped them to the inside of the cups. We then poked holes through the tops and threaded through gold curling ribbon, with the knot is on the inside. Simple, but cute!

Egg Carton Animals and flowers can be created with a lick of paint and some creative imagination. See below for a single cup being used as a snail shell, a turtle shell, a duck beak and a flower. They are cute to play with on their own, or glue them onto a card to make unique birthday cards. What other egg carton animals can you come up with?

Egg Carton Christmas Trees look effective, made from 11 single egg cups. All you need is paint, glue, tinsel, backing cardboard (we used a cereal box), red paper and Christmas balls, and you have a beautiful Christmas artwork. The Christmas balls fit perfectly inside the egg cups - just make sure you hold them there securely (we used super glue). The result is impressive - we will attach this to our front door this Christmas. See photos, below.

Other ideas you can make with single cups include making a wreath for Anzac Day or Christmas, by painting them all red and glueing them to a circular piece of cardboard. You could also make a bouquet of flowers to hang on the wall, by painting them individual bright colours and attaching them to canvas. My daughter came up with this Christmas tree idea by laying the egg cups out on a table and playing with different shapes.

Why don't you give playing with egg cartons a "crack", this weekend?
