Looking for something different to do these school holidays and throughout the year? Is your family into books? Head on over to the State Library, NSW. The State Library has a range of activities and things to see for all ages and they have their Kids at the Library series running throughout summer. These events are kid and family-friendly, and there is so much to explore at the State Library. Each of these events is taking place throughout the year, so keep an eye on the State Library page for updates and new activities.
The Mitchell Library is filled with new places to explore, so head on over to the Mitchell Library Vestibule to join a tour and explore the library – everything they have to offer! Bring the whole family to explore the library and its galleries, collections, and other spaces during your visit – no need to book, just turn up and join the fun throughout January! Tours start at 11am during the school holidays on the following dates, and on other dates at 1pm.
The library is also offering five days filled with fun and activities in the third week of January, where kids can come and make craft at the library between ten am and three pm, and they will get the chance to make tents, play dress-ups, read books and see a puppet show.
This activity is suitable for all ages, and no bookings are required – and kids will take part in camping-related craft. Recreate a camping site with tents and a river, and other camp-related activities for five hours. Head over to the John B Fairfax Learning Centre at 1 Shakespeare Place, Sydney, NSW 2000 Australia to enjoy this free activity.
Love craft? You and your child can join a two-hour workshop at the State Library NSW on the 17th of January, This activity is aimed at children aged four to twelve, and it is free for one child and an accompanying adult, though you will have to register for this activity. If you love craft and experimentation, this is a perfect workshop, where all materials are provided, and you can choose what craft activities you will do. While you take on activities that are easy and challenging with expert crafters, you will learn new skills and make something you can take home. Any child must be accompanied by an adult, and you can enjoy the library before you come to this activity.
For those who love to draw, Andrea has a fun workshop, where she shows you how to turn a squiggle into an amazing and unexpected drawing – so get your pencils and paper ready. Join her at 1pm on the 19th of January for a 45-minute workshop that is suitable for all ages. Many people don’t know where to start when they draw. This workshop shows you how to see things differently – and gives you steps to turn a squiggle into art. It is suitable for all ages.
Come along to the State Library on the 24th of January at ten am for a two-hour workshop, where you will create a model of the Mitchell Library. Your model will include staircases, stained glass windows and all the detail possible. It is suitable for children aged eight to twelve and their chosen adult, and is also free, but you must register! Have fun together creating something unique, and all materials will be supplied.
Incredibilia is an immersive theatre experience taking place on Sunday the 12th of May 2024 for a one bour workshop in the Dixson Room, and you will need to book for this one.
This magical theatre is inspired by the works of beloved children’s author Libby Hathorn – and tells the story of two best friends embarking on an imaginative journey across deserts, spooky cities, exotic gardens, and a trip to the moon, where you will uncover the true meaning of connection. Kim Carpenter, theatre maker from Theatre of Image has adapted the story for performance, and it will be accompanied by Peter Kennard’s one-man band in this celebration of family, friendsip and the comfort of home.
