Kids Alive – Do The Five
The hot Darwin weather often sees lots of people look for swimming pools to cool themselves down, especially during Darwin's "build-up" season where the weather is very hot and humid. Public swimming pools, the Wave Lagoon at Darwin Water Front and rock holes outside Darwin are popular destinations for people in Darwin during the build-up. If you lucky, you can take a plunge in the swimming pool at your own house or apartment.
Owning a swimming pool is a big responsibility for the owner. Pool owners must ensure that their pool is fenced and complies with local government legislation. Drowning is the greatest cause of accidental death in children under five years old in Australia. Each week, on average, one child drowns.
Since 1988, Laurie Lawrence - former Australian swimming coach and water safety ambassador - has educated lots of people through the water safety program "Kids Alive – Do the Five".
Laurie Lawrence will be visiting Darwin City Library for Kids Alive Do the Five special Story Time to help and remind parents about water safety. In this special story time, Laurie Lawrence will give you tips about water safety for kids. No need to book and it's free. Just come to Darwin City Library, located on Harry Chan Avenue Darwin NT 0800, on Saturday 27 May 2017 at 10.00am.
