Kidneys, AKA the bean-shaped organs that work around the clock to keep us healthy, are like our silent heroes. So why not step out to show your support for those among us whose kidneys could use a helping hand? Join the Kidney Health Research Walk on 11th September 2016 to help raise funds and awareness for kidney health.

The Perth walk begins and ends on Taylor Street in Victoria Park and will feature a 3.7 km route. The event is however nationwide, with fundraising walks being held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Launceston, Melbourne, and Sydney. There are also community walks taking place in Geraldton, Redcliffe, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, and Coorow.

People with all levels of fitness and abilities can participate, as there are varying walking distances available. At the end of the walk, you will be rewarded for your effort and social conscience with food and beverages, as well as family-friendly entertainment.

Enter as an individual, or round up family, friends and colleagues to enter as a team. Adorn yourself in all things red, or get creative with a dress-up costume to be in the running to win prizes for the Best Dressed Team and Best Dressed Individual. If joining the event is not an option, you can always donate to an individual or a team to show your support.

Why walk for kidneys?
Healthy kidneys are needed to filter waste products out of our blood and get rid of them as urine. They also have lots of other jobs, like keeping the amount of fluid and salts in our body in check, activating the vitamin D we get from glorious sunshine, and regulating blood pressure. When they are working well, we don't think about them. Damaged kidneys on the other hand can make a person very sick, and even can cause life-threatening illness. There are different ways that the kidneys can get damaged and people from all walks of life and of all ages can be affected. Learn more about kidneys and kidney disease on the Kidney Health Australia website .

There is still a lot to learn about what keeps kidneys healthy and what the best ways are to help the ones that are damaged. More scientific research is needed to save and improve the lives of Australians with kidney disease. The Kidney Health Research Walk is your chance to help make a difference. In 2015 over $125,000 was raised and over 3000 people participated.

Benefit your own health with a good dose of physical activity, at the same time as contributing to a health need that affects so many Australians. Proceeds go to The Priscilla Kincaid-Smith Kidney Research Foundation.
