Join Perth's young people at a carnival of creativity
National Youth Week from April 8-17 is a celebration of the contributions and achievements of young Australians. For the sixth year, Perth is marking the event with the KickstART Festival which is all about creativity with an emphasis on art, science and technology. While most of the events are for 18-25 year olds, the KickstART Festival Day on 16 April invites people of all ages to join in the fun.
The KickstART Festival is proudly presented by Propel Youth Arts WA, a non-profit organisation dedicated to creating opportunities for young people to engage in the arts. This year the festival theme is "Spark" and there are a variety of events to spark the imagination. On Festival Day the Perth Cultural Centre will be divided into several zones with each concentrating on a different expression of the theme.
The KickstART Markets feature more than 60 stalls with handmade crafts, jewellery, fashion and more. This is the perfect place to find a unique gift and support the designers and artists of the future. There will also be plenty of community information and food trucks for when hunger strikes.
The KickTECH Zone is the home of the Scitech Science Wonderland and a new technology playspace. Check out a 3D printer or ride a Segway (must be over 18). Try an Oculus virtual reality headset (must be over 13) or watch the paining robots Dot and Dash at work. Help build a crowd sourced garden with BLOOM, an interactive 'urban toy' of bright pink interlocking pieces that can be twisted and moulded into hundreds of formations.
The KickstART Zone brings music to the Wetlands Stage as a selection of emerging and established bands perform throughout the day. As well as music, the CO3 Youth Ensemble will present dance and movement performances reflecting the unique features of the Cultural Centre.
With so much going on, the KickBACK Zone at the Urban Orchard will be a relaxing oasis. Watch street performers, play some giant games or just chill in a bean bag.
KickstART Festival Day takes place in and around the Perth Cultural Centre on Saturday 16 April from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.
