When one thinks of burgers, it's pretty straightforward: meat patty, bread bun, ketchup, mayo, and mustard. And more often than not, there's also some chips and soda on the side. What Kickburger has done is they've taken that basic concept and given it an innovative Asian twist. Imagine flavors from coriander, lime, and lemongrass in your burger - it's exciting, fresh, and unexpected. But you really have to taste it to believe it.

The menu is not extensive, but it is original. The burgers have funky names, like Jean-Pork Van Damme (mint pork) and Chick Norris (lemongrass chicken), and they have an eggplant-based patty (Aubergine Jolie) for the vegetarian customer. And for a truly out-of-the-box burger experience, get the Mister Miyagi - it's got soft-shell crabs. By now, you may have already figured out the recurring kung-fu/karate theme - a personal interest of one of the owners.

All the burgers are dressed up with pickled vegetables and lime mayo, among other things. When you order the shoestring fries, amp up the flavour with the Daniel-san seasoning (what's in it is a secret - you have to ask the staff about it). Their limited offer burger is the Beef Lee (as in, Bruce), which I'm pretty sure carries quite a punch because it's got kimchi in it. And to round out the entire meal, you have a choice between a soy drink or a chrysanthemum tea. Now that's one-of-a-kind.

I had the Chick Norris burger and the shoestring fries, and they were very good. If a soy or tea drink is not your thing, they go well, too, with a beer or a cider.

They have a stall at the People's Market in Collingwood, but the downside to this is that they'll only be there till the end of March.

Not to worry, though. If you can't catch them at the Market, follow them on Twitter or Facebook for updates on new locations because they do have plans of setting up in other (hopefully permanent) locations. The burgers are certainly worth the effort.
