Kewarra means
at the foot of the rainbow in Djabugay (Tjapukai) traditional Aboriginal language. Kewarra Beach might be not as popular as Trinity Beach and Palm Cove in Cairns but this beach is secluded and worth a visit.
Situated in a coastal suburb of Cairns in the Cairns Region, Queensland, this beach is protected from the southeasterly swell by a rocky headland, and a large shallow sandbank fills most of the bay. Kewarra Beach is a very residential suburb with houses, not resorts or holiday accommodation overlooking the beach.
The sandy beach is clean and wide with water still deep enough for a swim. Just remember that swimming is allowed within the patrolled area and in stinger nets throughout the warmer months. Look out for the hermit crabs on a low tide.
This beach has picnic tables with a large undercover BBQ area, play equipment, and public toilets on site. There is a wide bike and walking track, ideal for kid's scooters or bikes. You can find plenty of beach seats along the pathway here.
Kewarra Beach is also a popular spot for fishing. It is possible to catch salmon here, though you will need some good luck as well! The southern part of the beach is a dog off-leash area. There are no shops near the beach, but there are really good shops on the main Road – Poolwood Road.
To access Kewarra Beach, take the turnoff from the Captain Cook Highway marked KEWARRA, or take the turnoff from the Captain Cook Highway to Trinity Beach.
