If you are a history buff or collector of rare or unusual arms and militaria, you won't want to miss this. Kevin Tarling has been organising these
weekend events for about twelve years. They are held in March and October at Angle Park. While not the biggest, he describes them as the friendliest such fairs in the country.
For those who are blissfully unaware of these events, you might consider a visit this time around. It might spark up a smouldering interest that's waiting to be ignited. The typical visitor is not a member of a bikie gang, rather, someone with an avid interest in history as spoken through arms and militaria.
A family friendly fair, Kevin says it's not unusual to see a grandfather wandering around with young grandson in hand, now and then stopping to maybe point to a set of medals or perhaps the worn soles of army boots like the ones he wore as a soldier trudging through slush.
Kevin assures me there will be at least 225 tables (68% from interstate) of interesting and quirky wares. At one fair, someone bought a German WWI flag signed by Kaiser Wilhelm (don't ask me which). Another choice find was a German WWII ocean-going mine (yes, discharged), the kind that "glues" to a submarine. That should liven your dinner party conversations.
What can you expect to find at the fair?
Books by Ian Skennerton - Kevin Tarling's specialty on
the day. (Are you missing a tiny part from an old military rifle you have safely locked away, or maybe need instructions on how to fix it?)
Knives and swords
Guns, new and second hand
Medals
Uniforms
One thing is for certain - arms and militaria are anything but stuffy topics, as this WWII poster illustrates (the marketing world has indeed changed).
For Sellers: There are still a few tables left with a reasonable fee of $80.00. This includes a trestle table and a couple of chairs.
When all this history starts to get to you, you can take a break at the canteen with plenty of food and soft drinks. To toast that weird and wonderful purchase, you can later wander to licensed premises nearby at
McQueen's Tavern with a tempting menu.
Kevin invites you to call him if you would like to discuss any aspect of the upcoming October fair, or other service that appears on his website. Make sure you stop by Kevin's tables (filled with Skennerton books) that weekend and say g'day.
Note: All Firearms Require a Licence.
