This rather small garden is hidden away behind the strip of shops in Mount Dandenong Road in Montrose. It can also be accessed through the Montrose Recreation Oval entrance.
It is named the as it featured in Kevin's gardening television program,
Sow What, which was broadcast on the ABC between 1967 and 1988.
Although small in size, there are parts where you can almost become lost. A short boardwalk takes you through a densely planted area, including a small stand of bamboo. The boardwalk has a handrail on one side to help steady those who are not steady on their feet.
One spot between three large gum trees has a park bench seat under them, which would be a very peaceful place on a warm summers day.
There are many rhododendron bushes throughout the garden which have traditionally been planted by incoming presidents of the Montrose Rotary Club. These, when in flower add a splash of colour to the otherwise verdant vista.
On my winter walk through the garden, several rhododendron bushes were in flower, not fully, but enough to add to the enjoyment of the garden.
The only bird sighted was one solitary mudlark, foraging among fallen leaves. These small magpie like birds do not seem to mind being approached closely, before departing the scene.
There are two entrances to the garden. The paths are compacted gravel and flat, presenting no problems for wheelchairs.
This would be a perfect little garden to visit for anyone with mobility disabilities as it packs a lot of different environments in a small area and is perfectly level over its entire area.
The entrance behind the shopping strip leads to a picnic table and seats surrounded by trees and would be a very enjoyable place for a picnic lunch or just a rest to take in the scenery.
It is a truly hidden garden, but it shouldn't be.
