Legendary Kermond's of Warrnambool has been around long before it was cool to be indie. Their reputation extends well beyond the shipwreck coast too. I remember their low-budget ads on Ballarat's BTV6 from my childhood, though until recently had never sampled their wares.
The narrow shopfront at 151 Lava St boasts no hip pretensions: plain décor, hearty burgers, and deliciously frothy milkshakes. You won't find fancy fillings like olive tapenade, tandoori chicken or Greek yoghurt on the menu, but the chilli burger brings an exotic touch. Think instead generous beef patties, fresh tomato, crunchy iceberg lettuce with onions, golden egg and cheese, enveloped by a crusty bun that keeps it all from going awry.
Tastewise? Pretty good. While I wouldn't drive 300 km to Warrnambool just to try one, dropping into Kermond's is a good way to warm up after squinting at frolicking cetaceans off the coast.
