Set to enchant audiences at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC, from March 21-29, this spectacular production features an extraordinary, star-studded cast including two international ballet icons from The Royal Ballet!

In a major coup for Queensland Ballet, Principal Artists Calvin Richardson and Akane Takada will grace the stage as the iconic lovers, Romeo and Juliet, on March 26 and 28. Their performances are the highlight of the season, and they promise to bring unparalleled artistry, passion, and dramatic intensity to the classic tale of forbidden love.

This collaboration marks a monumental occasion for Queensland Ballet, with Calvin and Akane joining a 72-strong cast of talented dancers from Queensland Ballet and Queensland Ballet Academy.

Acting Artistic Director Greg Horsman is thrilled to have these extraordinary performers on board, saying, "These artists have reached the top of their game at one of the world's most celebrated ballet companies. Their performances in Romeo and Juliet will undoubtedly be unforgettable."

Calvin Richardson, who rose quickly through the ranks of The Royal Ballet to become a Principal Artist in 2024, is a celebrated talent in the ballet world. Originally from Traralgon, Victoria, Calvin's guest appearances with Queensland Ballet will mark his first performances on home soil in his new role as Principal Artist.

Alongside him, Akane Takada, a highly respected Principal Artist of The Royal Ballet, will bring her stunning artistry to the role of Juliet. With an international career that has included winning scholarships and accolades at prestigious events like the Prix de Lausanne, Akane's performance will be a true masterclass in classical ballet.

This production of Romeo and Juliet celebrates not only the immense talent of its international stars but also Queensland Ballet's ongoing relationship with The Royal Ballet, especially in this landmark year celebrating 60 years of the MacMillan repertoire. A special thank you is extended to Kevin O Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet, for making Calvin and Akane's performances possible.

Queensland Ballet is also proud to showcase several former dancers as Guest Character Artists, including the renowned Christian T e1tchev, Janette Mulligan, Matthew Lawrence, and David Power. Their performances in key roles such as Friar Lawrence, Lord and Lady Capulet, and Juliet's Nurse will add depth and authenticity to this dramatic production. Also joining the cast is the incomparable Lisa Pavane, a former Principal Artist of the Australian Ballet and English National Ballet, whose graceful portrayal of mature roles will bring an extra layer of richness to the show.

Additionally, the talented Jonathan Lo will guest conduct select performances, ensuring an extraordinary musical experience to complement the stunning choreography. Whether you're a seasoned ballet lover or new to the art form, this production offers something for everyone.
