The Kenneth Jack Annual Memorial Watercolour Awards was established by the Watercolour Society of Victoria in 2007.

The prestigious award is held in honour of former Watercolour Society of Victoria Patron, the late Kenneth Jack AM MBE RWS AWI, a former watercolour master and innovator, who wished to elevate the watercolour art form onto an equal footing to that of painting.

Kenneth Jack's career as an artist commenced in 1944 whilst he was with the RAAF, where he created some 500 artworks during the war. As a teacher in the 1950's he established the printmaking and painting departments at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. Drawing and draftsmanship were the hallmark of Ken's art, however he also excelled as a master in watercolour.

Ken gave so much to the broader art community as President of the Watercolour Society of Victoria (formerly the Royal Watercolour Society of London, which opened a branch as the Old Watercolour Society Club Melbourne in 1974), a founding member of Australian Guild of Realist Artists, a member of Australian Watercolour Institute NSW and member of the Royal Watercolour Society, London.

The award was recently showcased in Montsalvat Eltham, however the Family wish to bring this event back to the city and share it with all of Melbourne.

This year's event will return to the beautiful Victorian Artists' Society Galleries in East Melbourne. The theme for 2014 is 'City Life'. Under this title the artists can explore their individual capabilities across - landscape, seascape, amazing urban scapes, portraits, animals, floral/fauna, parks and gardens.

The Society is fortunate to have the Director of the Heidi Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne, the experienced Jason Smith, as the Judge for this year.

The opening evening will be made very special with the entertaining and engaging David de Kretser as the guest speaker and exhibition opener. The winner of the coveted award will receive prizes to the value of $10,000.

When I was a teenager I was encouraged to join Mr Kenneth Jack's art classes at Caulfield Tafe/ Caulfield....CIT I remember with great fondness of his encouragement and his enthusiasm towards me in my pursuit of art. I absolutely loved going to his after school art classes and did very well.
Over those decades I have kept an eye on his work and it was also back then that he submitted his work to be published on 12 mth NAB or Comm. Bank calendars of which I've kept all these years. He taught me just so much and very generous in his teachings.

Visiting during this time to see his works you wouldn't be disappointed at all but come out very inspired and satisfied with what you will see..

Painting in water colours is a very difficult medium but Kenneth Jack does/did it with such ease.

Brilliant!
