I first heard about the on the 1st Floor of 2059 Moggill Road, Kenmore via my brother. He is a 5 foot 7 weight lifter and I was baffled to hear him carrying on about something called a 'Float Tank'. He gladly informed me that it was something 'I must try' because it was 'so cool'.

But it all sounded rather far from 'cool' to me. The notion of floating in a giant tub of Epsom salts (350 kg to be exact) in the dark, with the lid closed like a cocoon sounded, slightly terrifying. I thought: aren't you just paying to float in a giant salty bath?

I was promptly informed that the Float Tank is far more therapeutic than your average bath. The Float Tank alleviates the effects of gravity as the salt-water solution totally supports your body, allowing all pressure to be removed from your joints and spine. This in turn allows your muscles, ligaments and tendons to relax, repair and restore, which provides relief from joint stiffness and pain. The best part, with all this floating and relaxing, you can do some serious stress busting.

So, eventually, I decided to give it a try. The operates by appointment only, so I made sure I phoned before hand. Also, make sure you check out the address closely on Google Maps or the like, as it is along a busy road and parking behind the building can be limited. I instead parked in the Supermarket car park across the road and walked over. The location along the street is pretty hidden, so keep your eyes wide open.

Once upstairs I found myself in a nice, casual and calm setting. There are two float rooms and I discovered there are also massage rooms, as there is a Sports Therapist on hand. I was then checked in and given the brief: the water temperature at 37 degrees Celsius (body temperature), music is played for 10 minutes, shower during this time, put earplugs in, float for 45 minutes, do not touch your face (unless you want salt in your eyes/mouth), music will be played for another 10 minutes, shower again, sit in reception for at least 10 minutes and then you are free to go.

I must confess that I did experience pain in my neck for the first 15 minutes, but I was aware this might be the case as I have had trouble with my neck for quite some time. The pain, as I was later informed, is normal on your first float as it is the first time we remove sources of constant stress. I've been back multiple times and I have never experienced pain since. When my neck muscles finally released I was in relaxation heaven. No phone, no cares, nothing but the peace and quiet to let my body and mind recharge. When I heard the music start up again, signalling the final 10 minutes of my float, I didn't want to hop out. In this dark tub I felt at peace and had, somehow, let go of all my daily stress.

Once out in reception, showered and dressed, I felt the most chilled out I had felt in months. After heading outside, with the bright morning sun in my eyes, in the face of a busy weekend taking place around me, I still managed to feel completely relaxed. So if you want to escape the busy life, and bust some serious stress, the Float Tank is definitely worth both the money and time - relaxing is what the weekend is for, after all.
