Cocktail and scotch bar without the pomp
It's not uncommon at Kelvin Bar to have people exclaim "This is my favourite bar!" and for good reason. Kelvin Bar, the mature older brother of Thornbury bar, Kitty Somerset, is a classy local fully stocked with more spirits than you can imagine and more friendly chats that you knew you could have.
Located in the Westgarth precinct of Northcote, Kelvin is a cocktail and scotch bar without the pomp. There are no waistcoats or sirs and madams, just really good drinks and friendly service. The lighting is dim and the music is often set to jazz, creating an elegant living room atmosphere, complete with a raging fire in winter and a collection of board games to keep you entertained. Take a seat at their ridiculously long and strike up a conversation with a stranger, or hide away on the cosy couches by the fire.
Their menu is extensive. There's something for everyone, from a dry gin martini for the well-heeled drinker to a 'Funky Midnight' for those with an exceptionally sweet tooth. If you're feeling over whelmed, don't panic, the staff are always handy for recommendations.
A word of warning: don't try to order an espresso martini or you risk a lecture about why an espresso martini is an insult to martinis everywhere. If you're looking for an alcohol and coffee hit, try their 'Italian Job', it's got a great chili kick.
Drinks range from $7 (Coopers pale ale) to $220 (Louis VII Sazerac) with most cocktails at $16. They have a snack menu of cheese and other delights from $4 - $13. Open 7 days, weekdays from 5pm, weekends from 2pm, the bar always closes at 1am, never earlier, never later.
They're so classy they don't have a website, but you can find then at 82 High st Northcote or give them a call 9482 6600.
Great for a date or catching up with friends, Kelvin is one of the best bars in town.
