A short walk off Ellis Street, in Kelowna's Cultural District , Kelowna, British Columbia, and you will find lanes less traveled and many opportunities for unexpected and unique subject matter for photographs.

If you are a photographer, you already know that absolutely anything and everything can catch your attention and show itself to be photo worthy. I love back lanes and post industrial or abandoned areas for this kind of out-of-the-box photo experience.

All my photos are shot with a Nikon D3000 , 18-55 mm lens, and are untouched. And on auto setting. I really do need to play more, but for now, that's what I do.

I've not had a camera of my own for many years… not since my Pentax K1000 (I know I'm dating myself here) during university days, when part of my education was learning my way around the dark room. Digital kind of bugged me at first, but after I decided to just go with it, I now see the benefits of taking hundreds of photos in one shooting and ending up with some great results. Old school photography usually meant about 36 shots per session and not always happy results. My son was moving up to a Nikon D5000, and offered me his 'old camera' for a good price. I'm so happy I said yes!

Taking a stroll down a back lane and 'looking' for the beauty in ugly and utilitarian from a variety of points of view, is what resulted in these particular shots.

Head outside with your camera and experiment. Take risks. Then come and tell us all about it.

An historic walking tour is yet another day's adventure in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.
