National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) are celebrating the work of two of the most significant and influential artists of the late twentieth century in 'Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines'. This world-first exhibition is on display 13 April, 2020.
Exclusive to Melbourne, '
Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines' exhibition offers new and fascinating insights into their unique visual languages and reveals, for the first time, the many intersections between their lives, practices and ideas.
By the early 1980s, Haring (1958–90) and Basquiat (1960–88) found a distinct style and created some of their most iconic works. Crossing Lines examines each artist's tragically short, yet prolific career through more than 200 artworks, including works created in public spaces, painting, sculpture, objects, works on paper, photographs and more.
'
Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines' begins with examples of both artist's work from the streets and subway stations of New York City, early collaborations and works from each artist's breakthrough exhibitions alongside many of their most acclaimed artworks exhibition.
The exhibition includes paintings featuring Basquiat's crown and head motifs and Haring's iconic 'radiant baby' and dancing figures. It examines symbols, iconography and their incomparable styles, and also provides a broader appreciation of the creative social circles in which they moved along with other iconic figures including Andy Warhol, Madonna and Grace Jones.
To coincide with
Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines the NGV have reimagined a mural on the gallery's iconic water wall paying tribute to a significant moment in Melbourne's cultural history, 35 years ago when Haring was invited to paint a temporary mural on the iconic city landmark.
