Located at Wright Circuit off Field Street in Adelaide Chinatown, Kazumi Ramen's Chinatown branch is where you can enjoy ramen that follows Japanese traditions and practices. Differing from other places offering ramen, wagyu beef is featured as the main ingredient in their dishes.

Offered as a special during our visit, Mazesoba is a variation of ramen in which the noodles are tossed through a sauce rather than served in a broth. The noodles are thicker than the normal variety and have a slightly chewy texture. There was enough wagyu mince to make eating the dish satisfying, and the sauce gave the dish a delicious umami flavour. A scattering of shredded nori seaweed, spring onions and sesame seeds completed the dish. It is best enjoyed by mixing all the ingredients thoroughly prior to eating.

Served with the dish are three items which are part of their extras selection – Ajitam soft egg, seaweed salad and pickled vegetables. The Ajitam soft egg had a lovely yolk, and the flavour of the seaweed salad was not off-putting. The tanginess of the pickled vegetables makes it a good foil to the richness of the Mazesoba.

When ordering their Jigoku Ramen, diners can have it at either the regular or extra level of spiciness. The regular level of spiciness was not too overwhelming, the broth having a delectable tongue-numbing sensation. The slices of wagyu beef were tender, and the meatballs were not tough. A change of texture was provided by black fungus and bamboo shoots, which had a nice crunch. We liked that the quantity of ramen noodles was generous and cooked al dente.

The only main dish not featuring noodles, the Chicken Katsu Curry, had a chicken cutlet that had succulent flesh set off nicely by a crisp coating. There was enough chicken to make the dish a satisfying meal. The curry had a slightly thick consistency, and the degree of spiciness is suitable for those not used to spicy foods. A small serving of Japanese pickles is served on the side.

One of their side dishes, their Karaage Chicken, had juicy flesh that was contrasted by a crisp exterior. It had the background gingery taste that we associate with Karaage Chicken. The chicken was lightly tossed in a house-made sauce that gave them a slight peppery flavour. While flavoursome enough by itself, Japanese mayonnaise was served on the side as a dipping sauce.

The restaurant was roomy, with the decor giving it a Japanese feel. During our visit, we were given wooden tags to write our wishes or comments if desired. The tags can then be hung on a wooden structure near the restaurant’s entrance.
