I'd been wanting to try in Fremantle for some time, but it took a while for me to get there as it's only open three days a week (Friday to Sunday 9am to 3pm) for breakfast and lunch and only open in the evening for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays (6pm to 9.30pm). If you want to go there for dinner on Saturday night, like we did, it's best to book ahead.

The night we went it was warm and still so tables were set up on the verandah outside the E-Shed. During the day you would get port views from there. We really enjoyed eating alfresco, but I'm not sure what the set up would be if the weather was not so kind. A male and female duo called 'Four on Six', serenaded the diners with guitar and violin tunes. They played a range of music and, although we were sat fairly near to the musicians, the music didn't intrude into our conversation and enhanced the dining experience.

The restaurant is BYO and the food, billed as Latin and North African tapas, is 'inspired by North Africa, Spain, mothers, grandmothers, imagination and innovation.' It offers different fare to what's available in most restaurants in Perth. I wasn't sure what most of the things on the menu were but the staff were very helpful when I asked them for more information.

The menu is categorised under five headings: Smaller, Plank, Bigger, Sides and Port Food. The 'Smaller' and 'Plank' sections include entrée style dishes such as dips, salad and dolmades. We ordered the trio of Labna dips which were made with yoghurt ($15) and a plank of roast tomato dukkah ($10) for starters. The dips were lovely but we were surprised that they didn't automatically come with pita bread and we had to order a serve of bread ($4) to go with them. The tomatoes were roasted with goat's feta and dukkah but were not as tasty as we'd imagined they'd be.

For our main course we shared a Smokey Green Quesadilla ($20.50) from the 'Port Food' section. This turned out to be a very good decision, as it was delicious. The quesadilla was like a crispy pancake filled with red beans, cheese, corn, rosemary and two types of yoghurt. Like all dishes in the Port Food section, it came with a side of Cajun waffle fries, which were very tasty.

Our non-vegetarian friends however were not so pleased with their main meals – the Moroccan lamb shanks on a bed of couscous ($22) were reportedly dry, and the prawn Sea Shakshuka ($28) too oily.

We felt there was a good choice of vegetarian food in the smaller dishes though not for mains. However, we were happy with what we ordered and, although the food took a while to arrive, we felt it was worth waiting for. All in all, this was a good dining experience at a reasonable price and we will be back to sample more from the menu another Saturday night.
