I have such amazingly fond memories of Laos after a 7 week stint of travelling the countryside in 2007. Laos borders China, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand and Vietnam and is rather mountainous, covered by tropical forest, with most of the population living in valleys of the Mekong River and its tributaries. I loved how it was still relatively untouched and how friendly the people were.

I loved their sweets as they tended to be coconut or rice, as in khao niao mamuang (sticky rice with fresh mango); bananas in coconut cream; and the traditional delicacy khao tom (steamed banana leaf parcels of sticky rice with coconut cream, red beans and banana or taro). Kanom krok was another favourite which are little griddle cakes made with rice, coconut milk and sugar. There was always an old lady making these and I'd buy a dozen hot off the pan.

I discovered that we have Laotian sweets made in Cabramatta and I couldn't wait to see if it was the same as what I had in my travels. The word on the street is that only a certain amount of sweets are made so once it's sold out, there's no more. It was crazy busy in the little arcade as I selected the steamed sticky rice and banana wrapped in banana leaf, cassava and mountain rice slice with coconut cream. These desserts are sooo good! I usually also purchase the colourful balls of glutinous rice flour served with warm coconut milk but my eyes weren't bigger than my tummy for once. I recommend you try at least everything on the menu at least once to discover which is your favourite.

Make a day of it and discover what Cabramatta also known as Little Vietnam has to offer. My advice is to follow the queues and try the amazing restaurants .
