It's no secret that New York City is surrounded by water, but did you know you could go kayaking here? From free sessions to tours that bring you all over the harbor, here's a look at various outfits that can get you out on the water this summer.

Downtown Boathouse
Where: Hudson River, at Pier 40 (near Houston Street); Pier 96 (at W. 56th Street); and at 72nd Street
When: Piers 40 and 96: Saturdays and Sundays, 9 am to 6 pm, some weekday evenings, 5 pm to 7 pm; 72nd Street: Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am to 5 pm, now through mid-October
Cost: Free
What to know: Walk-up sessions; lessons available; bring a bathing suit, or shorts and a tee-shirt

Kayaking on the Hudson
Where: Hudson River, off of 72nd Street
When: Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am to 5 pm, now through October 10, 2010
Cost: Free
What to know: Walk-up sessions; 20-minute paddle instruction provided; must wear a bathing suit or shorts and a tee-shirt and know how to swim
Governor's Island
Where: New York Harbor
When: Fridays, 11 am to 4 pm, Saturdays, noon to 5 pm, now through October 10, 2010
Cost: Free
What to know: Walk-up sessions; available at Pier 101

Manhattan Kayak Club
Where: All over New York Harbor, from Tappan Zee to Red Hook
When: Nearly daily
Cost: $35-$225
What to know: Over 30 local tours available for all levels; RSVP online
New York Kayak Company
Where: Hudson River Park, at Pier 40 (near Houston Street)
When: Beginners classes Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 am and Tuesdays at 6 pm
Cost: $100-$150
