A new solo album and tour for acclaimed singer songwriter
Kav Temperley is one very busy man. This year has seen him on a national tour with Eskimo Joe, playing the Hotter Than Hell Festival, joining in the Vast Project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and more recently he has been performing acoustic shows in peoples living rooms and backyards in association with Parlour Gigs. And if he wasn't already busy enough, he has also found the time to write and record his debut solo album.
Best known as the frontman of iconic Aussie band Eskimo Joe, Kav Temperley is taking the leap to step out as a solo artist. His debut solo album titled All Your Devotion is set for release digitally and on vinyl on September 28. Described as "a collection of ruminating, thoughtful and affecting songs", the album has been produced alongside Pip Norman (Troye Sivan, Jarryd James, Urthboy) and John Castle (Megan Washington, Vance Joy, Bertie Blackman).
The first single from the album, "Pollyanna", is available now and was inspired by a painful period in the singer's life when he found himself having lost his grounding and questioning his identity. He reflects, "I had just lost my marriage and the band had decided to take a break, all of these things that defined me were no longer around. It was one of the first times in my life I felt like a stranger just rolling along, but I realised that amongst all of this I was a Pollyanna, someone despite the bad news always looks on the bright side." With an arrangement that includes a combination of strings, piano and guitar complementing each other, this song charms from the very first notes.
Unlike his music with Eskimo Joe, it is important to point out that All Your Devotion is not your classic rock album. Rather it has a more intimate, singer-songwriter vibe, with pared-back sound and more personal lyrics. It is an album about new love, expressing a story of romance and evolution, from those exciting and sometimes anxious early days of a new relationship, through desire and happiness. For Eskimo Joe fans such as myself, listening to this album for the first time is an exciting mix of the new and the strangely familiar. The sparse and uncluttered production is new musical territory for Kav, yet his unique vocals are instantly recognisable and relatable, making this album easily accessible.
All Your Devotion features 12 tracks, and for new fans and old, there is a lot to love about this album. The first track, "Queen of My Heart", is an uplifting and hopeful love letter in song, with confident and honest lyrics that epitomises the singer-songwriter aesthetic. There are also catchy melodies in "Pollyanna" and "This is The Love", as well as seductively smooth tracks "Devotion" and "Please Distract Me". For a more upbeat, and totally danceable groove, you can't go past "Expectations" which is one of my favourite tracks on this album.
With intimate and relatable lyrics, Kav has certainly found his own voice in his debut solo album which is sure to resonate with listeners. The only objection I have is the song "Christmas Lights", which seems to be an odd inclusion on this album.
Sergeant Kav will be reporting for touring duty during October and November - don't miss his live gigs
With the release of All Your Devotion on 28th September, Kav does not appear to be slowing down any time soon. As well as performing with Eskimo Joe in the Under the Southern Stars Festival run in 2019, you can also catch Kav performing tracks from All Your Devotion, and perhaps a few Eskimo Joe songs thrown in for good measure, across the country. "It's just going to be me with an acoustic guitar and kick drum strapped to my back", he explains, "I want these shows to be raw and real so people feel like they've been there right next to me through the writing of this record".
During October and November Kav will be performing at the following venues:
