I find one of the best things to do on holidays is to hire a car, so I can drive from place to place. This allows me to stop anytime or veer off into a side street if a sign catches my eye.
This is exactly what happened on a recent trip to the North Island of New Zealand, as my girlfriends and I were on our way to the Bay of Islands, we came across the
Kauri Clock Factory in Whangarei.
At first glance, we wondered if this was the place that could create one-of-a-kind clocks. The front yard was scattered with heaps of old trees and stumps, which did not indicate that any life was left in them, but, as told to us by the creator, these were perfect for his masterpieces.
Piles of tree branches and stumps at front gate
The Kauri tree is the most famous New Zealand native tree and dates back to the Jurassic or Permian period, approximately two hundred and thirty million years ago. Natural disasters all those years ago flattened huge forests and buried them in swamps, allowing the wood to be perfectly preserved. The Kauri tree wood is the oldest useable wood in the World.
We were advised that in New Zealand today, the legislation prohibits the felling of any growing Kauri tree; however, Kauri Clocks have permission to use the ancient roots and stumps. Once acquired from the swamps, a laborious task begins. Firstly, the wood needs to be water blasted, and air dried for several years before it is sliced up and then dried in a special kiln for approximately five weeks.
The natural grain of the wood creates distinctive designs, so no two pieces are identical. Kauri Clocks uses specially formulated resins to gain top-quality gloss finishes and sand others that are totally natural. Wall and mantle clocks are not the only items produced; sculptures, pendulums, pens, gifts, tables, boards, crosses, key rings, magnets, and more, are manufactured in this factory. The showroom was very impressive!
