Affordable traditional Japanese food at Rundle Mall
Katsumoto Restaurant is located at Gays Arcade, off Adelaide Arcade. Not many people are aware of this place because Gays Arcade is not a main thoroughfare at Rundle Mall. We were introduced to this restaurant by a friend when we first came to Adelaide. She told us we just have to try their Nasu Dengaku (deep fried eggplant with sweet miso sauce) dish. We did and were totally hooked and have since revisited the place many times. Deep frying the eggplant probably intensifies the flavour of the eggplant because other restaurants grill the eggplant and it just doesn't taste as nice. The eggplant was tender and the miso sauce complemented it perfectly.
The Tonkatsu served here is one of the best I have eaten, with a crisp coating contrasting wonderfully with the perfectly cooked meat. It is served with Tonkatsu sauce, which is best described as a thicker version of Worcestershire sauce, mustard and Japanese mayonnaise. The mustard and mayonnaise can be mixed together to dab on the Tonkatsu pieces to give it a bit of punch.
Teriyaki Chicken consists of pan-fried pieces of chicken that is covered in teriyaki sauce. The skin of the chicken was crispy which contrasted nicely with the tender meat and the teriyaki sauce complemented the chicken perfectly.
Katsumoto is also one of the places where I can eat Yakitori in Adelaide. The Yakitori served here consists of a mixture of two types of skewers of chicken, one consisting of chicken pieces with onion and another consisting of chicken meatballs. Both were grilled to perfection accompanied perfectly by the sauce it is cooked with.
