What can be more convenient than having hot springs in your own town. Katherine has its own hot springs for everyone to enjoy. Katherine is a town situated on the Katherine River, 320 kilometers down south from Darwin. Katherine is the fourth largest settlement in Northern Territory.
Katherine Hot Springs is located in the Katherine river bed (off from Victoria Highway). From the CBD of Katherine, head down the Victoria Highway approximately 2kms. The springs pump from deep within the earth at a mild temperature. These natural thermal springs are comprise of a series of clear pools framed by native vegetation. Approximately 25 - 30 C, it makes the springs very lovely and enjoyable to take a dip in during the cooler dry season months. Sit back and relax in the beautiful thermal pools. This bubbling natural spring has used by many a way of healing, your muscles will unwind after a hard day.
Thanks to the Katherine Town Council that have spent a few dollars over the years and transformed this area from a simple hole in the river bed to a well thought out recreational area. This area become more beautiful and they also did restructuring the hot springs area with concrete seating/steps. The Katherine Town Council build new raised walking platforms so that tourists can now see the source of the spring water via a viewing platform. And from there, you can follow the stream a few metres down through the walkway/bridge to the main pool. Associated walking tracks along the Katherine River corridor also provided.
The main pool has wheel chair access, stainless steel rails and the walls have been formed out of rock. Persons requiring special needs are catered for via a vehicle track down into the river bed. You can get key to be obtained through the local service station. With fully disable access anyone can enjoy this magnificent natural wonder.
The main pool now has a gravel bed which keeps the sediment disturbance down, so we can see the crystal clear water that looking fantastic. From there the springs flow along to another pandanus lined pool to a retaining wall that acts as a small waterfall, allowing water to flow over into yet another small plunge pool before the stream meanders amongst the paperbark trees and out into the Katherine River 30 metres away.
The area from the hot springs is well grassed with shady spots and sunbathing areas. The open grass areas that are shaded by large trees, perfect for a picnic.
For someone who wants to do more than have a relaxing day in the plunge pool such as Katherine Hot Springs, they can stretching their legs and do walking or biking on the path that follows the river bed. This path will take you through the River Red Gums or Ghost Gums a few kilometres to the Katherine low level nature reserve. Here you can view and walk across the Katherine River as it passes through this very popular swimming spot.
The Katherine Hot Springs are open daily for 24 hours but it close from November to April due to excess water. Please note the Katherine Hot Springs is a dog restricted area so all personnel can have a safe and enjoyable experience.
