All the F1 drivers say they started racing go karts at 6 but anyone with a child under 8 will know that it is impossible to do this in Sydney without owning your own kart. If you want to drive a go kart, you must be 12 ... and that's where the skid karts come in.

Head over to Kartatak at Wolli Creek (Arncliffe) and test out the 'petrol powered bumper car that power-slides!' You aren't allowed to crash into each other, but there is a safety bar that allows the young speed demons to start their racing career. They even have a double car for those passengers of 5 and up who don't want to miss out on the fun (though my daughter at four was in tears that she was relegated to spectator - until we found the coin operated motor bike ride to distract her).

Safety instructions are clear, and the racers are supervised (speed and stupidity often go together with the 8 year olds, and their competitive parents for that matter), helmets and hairnets provided. Height restrictions also apply (minimum 127 cms for skid karts) - and don't forget to wear enclosed shoes.

There are also arcade games for those that want a break in between races. Look into the party room too - racing and free arcade games - chuck in some chips and that would be every boys perfect celebration!

You need to get a licence ($9) that lasts a year, so one visit won't be enough! My eldest has just graduated to the Go Karts, so he and I are itching to test each other on the 'real' track.

Be warned - it's addictive fun.
