As you drive along the Vasse Highway karri trees of increasing stature and density tower above as new growth creates a tunnel of a near-impossibly green colour. Turning off the highway you are met with a field usually full of kangaroos and emus lazing on the grass. Beyond the field the karri trees open up to reveal a beautiful secret, a large body of water so still it reflects the trees fringing it's shores near perfectly.

This is Karri Valley Resort, a quaint series of timber buildings nestled within the now 100-year-old Beedelup National Park four hours south of Perth. Situated 20 minutes out of the sleepy timber town of Pemberton, the resort offers guests a romantic blend of nature based relaxation and activities.

There are two options for accommodation. Lakeside rooms are simple, clean and modern rooms sitting right over the waters edge. Perfect for couples, they feature a comfortable queen size bed, private balcony, bathroom and an extra bed if you have a kid in tow.

If you are travelling with family or friends a host of rustic log cabins are positioned between the trees back from the lake. These have plenty of room, sleep up to eight guests and have their own cooking facilities.

As far as activities go if you love nature, you will undoubtedly fall in love with this place. When you eventually manage to pull yourself away from just staring at the karri-fringed lake you can take a walk around the body of water meandering through the thick undergrowth and towering trees that bring the region its fame.

Across the lake you will find Beedelup Falls, which after rains can turn into a raging 100-metre torrent of water cutting through the tall timbers. A swing bridge crosses above the falls while further upstream a walkway and lookout takes you to within centimetres above the picturesque waters.

From the resort you can hire canoes, dinghies, fishing gear and bikes. You can play mini golf, test your archery skills and feed the animals. there's a playground by the lake and resort staff put on a sausage sizzle on weekends.

At night the restaurant comes into its own as well. Also positioned above the waters edge, the restaurant has uninterrupted views over the lake and trees both of which become floodlit in front of the eatery at night time. The small range of food is excellent quality although on busy nights you may have to wait up to an hour for it to arrive.

For me having no phone reception or WiFi was great, but there are people who complain about this so be warned, there is absolutely NO Internet, so plan ahead if you need directions, opening hours, attractions etc. for the surrounding area.

Karri Valley Resort is the kind of place you would be happy never to leave. The resort, the surrounds and the local attractions are a world-class and largely unknown gem when compared to more popular South-Western towns. This is one of those idyllic places which never leaves those who have been.
