There are too many sales to choose from
Have you ever gone out on a fine Saturday morning in the hope of finding garage sales, but it takes hours just to come across a few good ones and you have to drive all over town to find them? Well on Saturday the 8th of November the whole town of Kapunda, north of Adelaide, will hold its annual garage sale day. Now that surely is bang for you buck!
They come from far and wide in utes and with trailers hitched. The kids come too with their pocket money. The dealers, the bargain hunters, the renovators and the mums to be seeking baby requirements. In fact every man and his dog comes to the annual town wide garage sale day. With a whole town full of garage sales everyone goes home with something regardless of whether they needed it or not. Funny about that.
local resident Frank says it takes him a week to set up his monster garage sale
Last year there were over 70 garage sales - so that's enough to keep you going all day. Some are tucked away in side streets or on the edge of town. But where to go to find them? When you arrive in town, the first stop is the tourist information centre on the corner of the Main street and Hill street. Staff will be outdoors selling a town map for $2 indicating locations of the sales. Sellers register for a small fee and this goes into advertising and the map printing. Bring a pen, so you can mark them off as you drive around. Right behind the tourist office, is the toilet facilities for those who come from Adelaide and need a pitstop. Another thing to do here is grab a few sausages to go, as breakfast will be cooked by the local Lions club with proceeds going to local community projects. Maps and snags are on sale from 8am.
Get your maps and breakfast to go here at the tourist information building at corner of Main and Hill Streets
Remember to bring some newspaper and boxes to wrap up your purchases and a pen to mark off the streets as you drive around. The town gets very busy as the bargain hunters whizz around in search of the best finds. There are quite a few antique dealers in town who have an annual clear out and many townsfolk use the day to clear out the sheds of accumulated stuff that just has to go.
These people will be clearing out the shed for the garage sale.
Who could resist all that treasure? The town has two bakeries and many cafes and tearooms, so there is plenty to enjoy for lunch. Make a day of it. If coming from Adelaide, it's best to travel on the Northern Expressway. This roads blends into the Sturt Highway and soon after you take the turn off exit to Kapunda .
The day starts at 8am and goes through until 4pm but the best bargains go early. It's a day not to be missed.
Friday update- there are 74 registered garage sales on the map for sale, plus the ring-ins that dont pay! So there will be plenty for you to come and see and buy. Watch your speed on the road works on the highway near Freeling and have a great day!
