Travel to Kalorama and Kapi

Kapi is an oasis of creativity on top of the mountain. It is the art gallery of Dandenong Ranges artist Heather Bradbury.

The gallery

Heather's paintings are inspired by nature and water droplets, hence the name Heather chose for her gallery. Kapi means water in the language of the Pitjantjatjara people of Central Australia.

Kapi Art Space provides space for artists to display their work for sale, wall space for paintings and plinths for 3D pieces.

Paintings and plinths.

It is truly a mecca for artists. They can exhibit their art, learn their art, or showcase their spoken or written word.

Kapi Art Space has three exhibition spaces, a performance space, a sitting room, and a workshop space. Workshops and classes are held year-round, catering for beginners and advanced artists, as well as offering lessons for juniors.

This says it all.

To us non-artists, the beauty of Kapi is the art gallery where we can gaze upon and admire the work of those more talented than us.

"Overflow". Tasmanian myrtle & glass.

Without admitting that, I may be a bit of a philistine when it comes to the arts (lack of talent is probably the reason). I was pleased to be able to identify the subject of every painting exhibited, not always the case with modern art.

bird painting
It's definitely a bird.

The three dimensional artwork, displayed on plinths throughout the gallery are the art of talented artisans.

On my visit, there were two artists busily working on their painting under the watchful eye of Heather.

Apart from painting, Kapi offers workshops and classes in printmaking, lettering, weaving, animation and more. If interested in any of these, a visit to their website will be enlightening.

The art gallery is very popular with tourists, both locally and from overseas. Unfortunately due to the current (March 2020) health crisis, the gallery is closed, but workshops and classes continue.

The setting is in a very picturesque part of Kalorama with a lookout over Kalorama Park with the Silvan Reservoir in the distance. Opposite Kapi and a well-patronised café just over the road. That road being Ridge Road which leads to the Skyhigh Restaurant and Burkes Lookout.

A visit to Kalorama would not be complete without a visit to Kapi.
