Kangaroo Point Green Bridge

From Kangaroo Point to the City Botanic Gardens & Eagle Street
Brisbane is known as the river city, and the Brisbane River divides the bustling commercial centre from the more laid-back, touristy and residential side. But the divide is being conquered, not just by improved rail and bus services but by a series of green bridges, including Kangaroo Point Green Bridge that goes from Kangaroo Point (obviously) to the Eagle Street Pier district and the City Botanic Gardens. It is already proving itself popular among residents of Kangaroo Point and tourists alike.

About the Bridge
The 460-metre bridge cable-stayed single-masted bridge cuts across the river at an angle and the design is meant to visually complement the location. However, to be honest, it is the least interesting of the green bridge designs, relying on a tried and tested simple bridge rather than the elegance of bridges like the Kurilpa Bridge. However, it does the job and it is a nice enough feature to the river.

Walking the Bridge
From the city side, the bridge starts at the northern end of the City Botanic Gardens and the southern end of the Eagle Street Pier district. You go directly from street level onto the bridge.
The city side of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge
The bridge is divided between pedestrians and cyclists. If looking for views, you might want to cross from one side of the bridge to the other at the lookout bays and tourists especially should take care not to walk out onto the cycle lanes without looking as cyclists in the area are often out exercising and don't like to slow down for people in their way.

There are lots of lookout bays along the bridge. The northern side is more interesting as it gives you views of the Eagle Street Pier district and the Story Bridge, one of Brisbane's most picturesque locations. In fact, the bridge will now interrupt the views from the Kangaroo Point cliffs, but the views from the bridge are arguably better anyway. Each lookout bay has both cover and seating and can be just a nice place to sit to watch the boats go by.

The end of the bridge at Kangaroo Point (or I assume the people who live on Kangaroo Point call it, the beginning) is at street level as well exiting at Scott Street. However, most tourists and people going to exercise will probably want to get to the riverfront level. There are both stairs down as well as an elevator.

What to see at either end
Of course now you can do a grand loop of the river, with a choice of multiple bridges to use to cross the water. Kurilpa Bridge lies at one end and the Story Bridge at the other, but crossing using the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is more pleasant than that venerable old crossing, along with the new

For tourists, this makes Kangaroo Point even more accessible, though many may choose to cross with the ferry which is also a nice tourist activity. But the views from the bridge also make it worth walking.

Locations of note at Kangaroo Point include River Life (cliff climbing and kayaking), Brisbane Jazz Club, and the Story Bridge Hotel. However for many people it will just be the riverside walk that attracts them.

On the city side, well the City Botanic Gardens is always a lovely place to visit, and the Eagle Street Pier district and the surrounding area has a lot of very nice restaurants, cafes and bars. But I think for many people, it is just a shortcut to the city or part of a riverside walk that continues on down the river to New Farm or up the river and past the city.

Overall
Personally, I would recommend this bridge to any tourist visiting Brisbane. It is part of a nice walk that includes City Botanic Gardens and Kangaroo Point. Aesthetically it is not my favourite bridge over the Brisbane River, but it is a really practical bridge for people in Brisbane, especially residents of Kangaroo Point and it helps connect the sides of the river even more than ever. before If you are in Brisbane, it is worth going for a walk over it.
