Throw a few snags in your esky and bring the whole family for a barbecue at the Kangaroo Point cliffs. There are plenty of free gas barbecues along the Brisbane River, and you can get comfortable at a picnic table or pack a rug and sit on the grass.
While the sausages are sizzling, there will be plenty going on to keep everyone entertained. You can take in the view of the city and Botanic Gardens across the river and watch the City Cats and cross-river ferries cruise past.
Heaps of locals keep fit by the cliffs, so you can “people watch” joggers and cyclists, as well as people doing those exercise bootcamps - and be pleased you’re relaxing with a cold drink!
There are usually a few thrillseekers climbing up the cliffs, taking great care as to where they’ll put their feet next - and it can be riveting to watch. While there are people climbing up, there’s usually others abseiling down and there are a number of operators that can hire you gear and show you how to climb or abseil the cliffs.
If you’d prefer something a little closer to the ground, Riverlife hires out bikes and rollerblades. It also runs kayaking tours.
For something more low-key, walk off lunch following the path that wraps along the river.
There’s even a short boardwalk through the mangroves. If you’ve got the time, stroll a little further and check out the yachts moored in the river. There are plenty of covered seats to take a break or simply enjoy the view.
That is true. The Kangaroo Point area is so beautiful and so good for various things. I go there sometimes for walks or just to get some fresh air while I sit near the footpath. I do not think it is good to go in the winter because last time I almost froze to death from the cold there. I went there also for photos for my cousin's wedding and they turned out so magical. We went to dinner down near the river afterwards and the food was great, I do not remember the name of the shop though. But as good as a nice picnic is nothing, that is a nice old tradition which has remained for a long time amonsgt everyone's cultures.
